2022 Update: Why I Took Katie Writes Offline & Deleted Instagram

Tuesday, 22 February 2022 Derbyshire, UK

Just a little bit of housekeeping.

While I know that the content of this post is unimportant in the grand scheme of things, I wanted to address it somewhere just in case anyone was wondering; and as you'll find out in a minute, this is one of the only 'platforms' that I have left online, so that's why I'm discussing it here.

If you didn't already know, I had two blogs: Derbyshire Delights and my 'main' blog, Katie Writes. I stopped writing posts for KW last June, but I left it online. Recently, though, I felt that it was best to take it offline. (Running a self-hosted WordPress blog is quite a commitment, and I didn't have time to keep diving in to sort issues out.)

It's never easy to make the decision to shut a blog down entirely. It did feel like the right time to let it go though. I'd achieved everything that I wanted to.

Katie Writes was part of my life for seven years. It was almost a decade's worth of work, where I'd not just reviewed makeup, but also documented parts of my life.

These days, though, I value my privacy a great deal more, and this was one of the main reasons for closing Katie Writes down.

Obviously with Derbyshire Delights being about this lovely county and what it has to offer, and not really (generally, this post aside!) being about me, I've no plans to stop blogging here.

If you followed this blog's Instagram account (@derbyshire_delights) you may have (but I doubt you did!) noticed the account has now gone. It wasn't something that was really a priority of mine, and I felt it was better to let it go.

Blogging is, by and large, a dying medium, so it probably seems like a strange choice. While I know that Instagram and TikTok are where it's at these days, I don't really feel any desire to keep fighting algorithms and playing the games of comparison and bragging that have become prevalent on Instagram, in particular, any more.

To be honest, I'm not great at social media. I haven't logged into Facebook for nearly five years, Twitter is something that I try to avoid at all costs, and Instagram never makes me feel good after a scroll through my feed. It's empowering to make the choice to step away from these platforms, to be honest. I've even gone back to using a Nokia phone for now! This might well seem weird to a lot of people, but it's made me happier than I've felt in a very long time - I'd highly recommend it if you feel overwhelmed by the Internet and your devices.

Anyway, before I go off on a tangent entirely... To summarise: Katie Writes is now offline. The Derbyshire Delights IG account has been deleted too. I don't really do social media any more. Derbyshire Delights is staying, though!

Thanks for reading this little ramble.
