Coffee at BEAR, Derby

7 Iron Gate, Derby DE1 3FJ, UK
BEAR in Derby has been on my 'must visit' list for ages. The cafe opened up on Iron Gate in December 2017, and I've been meaning to go and try their coffee out ever since.

I'd been in Derby for an important meeting, and afterwards I was in desperate need of a caffeine fix because I'd had no sleep at all! Enter BEAR.

It's about halfway up Iron Gate in Derby city centre, a stone's throw away from Derby Cathedral.

I don't have any other pictures, unfortunately. Blame the sleep deprivation... But that's surely just another excuse to go back?

I ventured in at about half 1 in the afternoon, and it was still pretty busy from lunchtime. Despite eyeing up the cakes on the counter, I didn't fancy anything to eat, so I just ended up ordering a cappuccino.

What was the coffee at BEAR Derby like?

I really liked it! I often find that artisan coffee shops make coffee that's just that little bit too bitter for my liking, but BEAR's was spot on. Seriously good coffee.

For two of us it cost £5.60. So, the pricing is pretty average at £2.80 a cup.

I can see myself going back there quite regularly (whenever I pop into Derby, really) for more coffee and to sample some of their food too.

The staff were really nice, despite being busy. They kindly brought our drinks over to the table for us, and it really didn't take long at all for them to make them. They didn't leave us waiting for ages, which I definitely appreciated in my sleepy state!

Because I sat quite near the door, I didn't get to nosy at much of the decor beyond the counter (which is located in the middle of the coffee shop), but I liked what I saw. It's totally unlike any other cafe I'm yet to encounter in Derby.

It feels like a coffee shop you'd stumble across in Nottingham, Manchester, or London, if that makes sense? Derby is finally catching up with the bigger cities thanks to BEAR.

BEAR have a couple of other coffee shops dotted around the Midlands, plus they've just opened one in London too! The Derby branch is their only one in the East Midlands, but it'd be lovely for them to branch out even further into the county or even the region, if they expand any further. They seem to be doing really well, and I can definitely see why!

It's worth noting that BEAR is bar too. They serve a range of lovely-sounding cocktails from 10am and stay open well into the evening, which makes it a good place to start your nights out in the city, doesn't it? (Yet another reason to go back!)
