Visit: Belper Fair, Derbyshire

Market Pl, Belper DE56 1FZ, UK

The last weekend in October can only mean one thing: Belper Fair!

Belper Fair

An annual tradition, Belper Fair brings out all the locals to grab some candyfloss and try their hand at hook-a-duck, me duck.

As a Belper girl, I’ve been to the fair numerous times since I was a kid. For the past few years, I’ve not had time to go. This year? I thought I’d try and pop in for a quick wander around on my way home. I got there at about half 9, only to discover that everything was being packed away for the year. Sadly, I’d missed my chance to go on any of the rides or grab myself a goldfish in a plastic bag.

The only people that were left were a handful of fellow locals wandering about looking for something, anything that might still be open. (Nearly all the rides, except for some big rides at the back were already half-dismantled.) Three police officers were wandering about, ensuring that nothing was about to kick off amongst the mere handful of people left. It was pretty much over.

The only thing vaguely familiar was the gorgeous smell of fried onion still wafting through the Market Place; even though all the food vans were closing.

Why I Love Belper Fair:

  • Fried onion smell. (That’s when you know the fair’s in town!)
  • It brings the whole town out to play.
  • The memories of happy trips there as a child.
  • It’s something exciting in an otherwise quiet town.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Belper Fair, it’s the only time everyone in town descends on the town centre. I’ve so many memories of this place, from evenings spent there with my parents on the little rides when I was a kid, to going with friends for heaps of candy floss and a ride on the ghost train as a teenager. (It’s worth noting that I’m still a wuss when it comes to the ghost train.)

Despite the fact that I couldn’t venture on any of the rides, I thought I’d take a few snaps of what was left – So, enjoy!

Have you ever been to Belper Fair?
